Ruth Negga has spent the past few months playing the tormented Lady Macbeth in the Longacre Theatre’s production of Macbeth, on Broadway in New York. Acting alongside Daniel Craig as the Scottish King, the star tells Vogue her favorite part about being in the iconic play has been hanging out with her fellow castmates behind the scenes. “I love hanging out with them, we’re a soul family,” says Negga. Last night at the Tony Awards, Negga earned a notation for Best Leading Actress in a Play for the part. She was excited to honor all sorts of casts and crew within New York’s theatre world, her own included. “It’s been shut down for two years, so it’s a great reminder [that] we need each other and how important it is to connect,” says Negga.
Given the Tony Awards are all about a sense of glitz and glam, Negga’s celebratory red carpet look unsurprisingly dazzled. On the step and repeat, she wore a custom Giorgio Armani Privé gown. The look, styled by Karla Welch, included a black velvet, halter-neck silhouette, which was accentuated with a plunging neckline and a crystal-embroidered net overlay on the full skirt. “I just felt effortless and really beautiful,” says Negga. “I love this dress so much! The way it’s made—it’s structured, but yet I feel really free in it.” Makeup artist Rebecca Restrepo and hair stylist Lacy Redway dialed up the Old Hollywood aesthetic, while dazzling jewels by Tiffany & Co. made it truly red carpet ready.
Now that the Tony Awards are over with, Negga will be resuming her role as Lady Macbeth for a few more weeks—meaning there’s still some time to catch her in the iconic Shakespeare play. “Afterward, I’m honestly looking forward to a little down time,” Negga says of her post-Broadway plans. It will be well-deserved. Below, have a closer look at how the star got ready for the 2022 Tony Awards.
