CPU Overclocking Not Working? Detailed Guide

CPU overclocking, the operating frequency of the processor will be higher than the factory specification for better performance. In doing so, there are three key factors that need to be reconciled. These are the base clock speed (BCLK), core voltage, and core multiplier.

If at least one of them is incorrectly configured, overclocking will not occur. For example, if you put too much load on your processor, its temperature will start to rise and your computer will freeze or you will get a BSOD error. In the worst cases, overheating issues can even cause the processor to stall.

Misconfiguration could be one reason, but there could be others I’ve overlooked. Without further ado, let’s move on to each solution that should help you fix this.

Note: Overclocking your processor is completely safe if properly tested and using the correct settings. However, doing this will void your component’s warranty and may even shorten its life in the long run.So if you know what you’re doing, consider overclocking your CPU You can, but do so at your own risk!

Check requirements
First, it’s important to check if your build meets the processor overclocking requirements. If you proceed without proper understanding, it is very likely that the system did not support the change in the first place.

The basic requirements for overclocking your processor are:
Requires an unlocked processor.
Your motherboard must support overclocking.
Adequate cooling hardware must be installed to prevent the CPU from overheating.
A power supply unit (PSU) must be able to handle the processor’s high power requirements even after overclocking.
Locked and unlocked processors

Not all processors are recommended for overclocking. Such processors are called “locked” because the manufacturer has disabled customization. Unlike unlocked processors, power, voltage, memory, and other critical parameters cannot be changed.

Among the two most popular manufacturers, AMD Ryzen chips are all unlocked, while some Intel Core variants are. Please note that only the K and X series can be overclocked if you are using an Intel processor. To make sure you have an unlocked processor for your desktop or laptop, check the list directly on Intel’s official website.

Note. A locked CPU can also be overclocked by improving his FSB (Front Side Bus) frequency on the motherboard or manually unlocking the multiplier. However, both of these methods are difficult and manufacturers prohibit users from doing so.
For example, ASRock’s BFB technology allows you to set power limits, allowing overclocking even on non-K-series Intel processors.

As with processors, not all motherboards support overclocking. Make sure your motherboard has enough VRMs (Voltage Regulator Modules). This is a power supply module that provides sufficient supply voltage for the chipset and microprocessor. The higher the VRM, the more stable the overclock.

Basically, there are various ways to check if your motherboard supports overclocking. The easiest way is to identify it by the letters used in the chipset name. Intel users should look for Z or X series motherboards, AMD users should look for B or X series motherboards.

Increasing the CPU voltage will inevitably lead to overheating. Cooling is therefore one of the decisive factors pushing processors to a higher level.

The general idea is to get a cooler that helps lower the overall system temperature so that the CMOS chips can run at higher clock speeds. Experts say air cooling solutions can deliver 30-80 MHz speedups, while liquid coolers can deliver 50-100 MHz speedups. The latter is considered the most efficient, but you can also opt for a high-end air cooling system.

These days, you can even find cooling solutions that work below freezing. A good cooler will immediately bring down the temperature significantly and improve overclocking. Therefore, if you are experiencing overheating issues after overclocking, it is recommended to improve your cooling settings.
