It’s the Summer of the Supermodel Loafer

It would only be rational that after a long winter—after endless months of cramming our feet into suffocating sneakers and boots—we’d finally let our manicured toes catch some rays as soon as the sun comes out. It seems that supermodels have a different idea in mind, however. Instead of going for something strappy and sexy this summer, the likes of Kendall Jenner, Hailey Bieber, and Bella Hadid are already opting for a more classic style: the loafer.

Just this past week, Bieber stepped out in New York City sporting a slick black skirt suit, wearing a black loafer with a hulking platform and a dainty little sock. A few weeks earlier, Kendall Jenner, who also works with Bieber’s stylist Dani Michelle, opted for a pair of simple dark-wash jeans and the tried-and-true supermodel tank top, along with a pair of old-man-beloved classic black loafers with tassels. Then there was Bella Hadid, who was spotted in mid May wearing a zip-up sweatshirt, a Heaven by Marc Jacobs graphic T-shirt, and a midiskirt that she paired with knee-high white socks and a pair of hefty loafers. (The grunge-informed ensemble recalled Marc Jacobs’s infamous fall 1993 Perry Ellis collection in which models were styled in skirts and combat boots.)

The scholarly style has been on the runway for quite some time, from Prada and Gucci to Miu Miu and Ganni. And while it might seem like an odd choice for the warmer climes, the sturdy loafer provides a chic anchor to any look, often working best with dresses and skirts. Vogue’s Steff Yotka agrees, noting that it’s “like a Converse or a Birkenstock—a Platonic ideal that has a life in all seasons.” (Yotka regularly opts for Prada’s spring 2020 woven loafers with gold chains or Loewe’s convertible platform loafer mules with her skirts and dresses.) The powerful shoe also complemented Bieber’s barely-there skirt suit, balancing the skimpy look perfectly. And the best part? The loafer is an elevated choice when you haven’t gotten a pedicure in time.

Baggy jeans have been dominating the denim conversation for some time now. From Rihanna in distressed Gucci with Amina Muaddi heels to Hailey Bieber in Eytys’s relaxed Benz jeans, the A-list cannot shake its obsession.

Kendall Jenner also bought into the trend, but straight-leg jeans remain the new-gen super’s preferred silhouette. Proving that there’s nothing better than a simple jeans and tee combo, for an outing in L.A. this week Kendall tucked a graphic T-shirt into acid-wash straight-leg jeans that stopped at her ankle—just above her polished preppy loafers.

The jeans in question are perfectly in line with Kendall’s recent favorites. She’s worn Khaite’s Danielle jeans non-stop since the start of the year. They’ve also had Vogue’s seal of approval – the jeans “elongate the leg like no other”, according to British Vogue’s commerce director Naomi Smart. “With evergreen signature styles in a few washes, Khaite founder Catherine Holstein has nailed the best, most flattering classic jeans,” says Smart.

Last night, Halsey stepped out in a pair of slinky trousers with an overlay of mesh shorts; up top, she wore a Tom Ford-era Gucci tank top. But this wasn’t just any run-of-the-mill commercial tank top from Ford’s reign on the Italian house. No, this was a precious, plucked-from-the-runway piece. The look is from the spring 1998 collection: A rayon-viscose clingy black tank top (also in white) that comes with two flossy leather straps affixed with a modernist silver G buckle. On the runway, the piece was styled with a matching skirt that also included the embedded leather straps. Halsey’s piece, styled by Lyn Alyson, was sourced from none other than Hollywood vintage go-to Tab Vintage

But Halsey isn’t the first pop star to rock this top. In fact, for the January 1998 issue of Vogue, Melanie Jayne Chisholm, better known as Sporty Spice aka Mel C, wore it on the cover. Though, Camilla Nickerson, the sittings editor of the shoot, took some creative liberties and put Chisholm into the tank top backward so that the silver G buckles were front-facing.
